Step 1: A Comprehensive Eye Exam

Your contact lens exam begins with a full eye health evaluation. Your optometrist will review your health history and conduct a series of tests to assess your vision and eye health. These include tests for eye focusing, eye teaming, depth perception, color vision, peripheral vision, and pupil response to light. The doctor will also check for glaucoma by measuring your eye’s fluid pressure and evaluate the health of your retina and optic nerve. Additionally, different lenses will be tested to see if contact lenses can improve your vision.

Step 2: Discuss Your Contact Lens Preferences

Once your eye health is assessed and contact lenses are deemed suitable, you’ll discuss your preferences. Would you like to enhance or change your eye color? Do you prefer daily disposable lenses, or are you interested in extended-wear contacts? If you’re over 40, the doctor will discuss age-related vision changes and how contact lenses might address these changes. We’ll help you choose the best option based on your lifestyle and preferences.

Step 3: Measuring the Surface of Your Eyes

A proper contact lens fit requires precise measurements of your eye. Using a keratometer, your doctor will measure the curvature of your cornea—the clear, front surface of your eye. Your pupil size will also be measured to ensure a proper fit.

Step 4: Tear Film Evaluation (If Needed)

If you have dry eyes, your doctor may perform a tear film evaluation to check the amount of moisture on the surface of your eyes. If you have chronic dry eye, some contact lenses designed to provide moisture may be an excellent option. Your doctor will discuss whether contact lenses are a good fit for your eye health and explore the best options available.

Step 5: Contact Lens Fitting

Next, you'll be fitted with a trial pair of contact lenses. Your doctor will carefully check the alignment and movement of the lenses on your eye to ensure they fit properly. If the fit is right, they'll confirm the prescription with additional tests to make sure your vision is clear and comfortable.

Step 6: Try Them Out

After your fitting, your doctor will ask you to wear the trial lenses for a week. This gives you a chance to see how they feel and if they work for you. You’ll return for a follow-up exam to make sure the lenses are fitting well and to finalize your prescription. If everything checks out, you can place an order for your supply of contact lenses.
